Located in on the western side of Hawaii's Maui Island is an expanse of beach that once acted as the royal retreat for many of Maui's rulers and royalty. Legend has it that the island was settled by travelers from Tahiti in the 12th century. After many hundreds of years, it was officially made part of the Hawaiian Kingdom at the end of the 1700s. Since then, Kaanapali has been developed and gained a reputation as one of the premiere resort towns in the Hawaiian Islands.
The region of Kaanapali is small at just under 5 square miles of land and only a little more than 1,000 people make their homes there. The small population and relatively isolated position have helped to maintain its natural beauty and pristine appearance. At one time it even had the honor of being named America's Best Beach.
During the 1960s, Kaanapali was chosen to build a planned-resort town. This was the first town of this type in Hawaii. The success of Kaanapali subsequently elevated its prestige and it became imitated as a model for many other resorts of this type around the world.
Those visiting Kaanapali will find all the resort-styled accommodations that could be expected. Hotels, condos, shopping, ease of transportation and activities both planned and unplanned are all available. In addition, it is located conveniently close to a number other places where a visitor can find more to do. Its beaches of white sand and a consistently moderate temperature are combined with all the comforts that a visitor could desire. This makes it a perfect vacation spot for those who want to take a trip to the Hawaiian islands but wish to avoid the more active, crowded and touristy Hawaiian hot-spots.
